5 Ways to Turn Your Hobby into a Career

5 Ways to Turn Your Hobby into a Career Wouldnt it be great if we could earn a living doing the thing we love doing the most? Well this dream could be a reality if you take action and lots of people do successfully  turn their favourite hobby into a career, whether it be by starting their own business, or making the decision to go professional. Of course, it is important that you put proper consideration into your decision, as not all  hobbies make for a lucrative business and following a new career path is a big decision to make. Some may also say that hobbies and work are best kept separate, as  they are an activity  that we get to participate  in in our free time as an escape from work, rather than BEING  the work. However, its also been said that if you find a job you love, youll never work a day in your life, so perhaps its a gamble worth making! If youre thinking of turning your hobby into a career, heres how you could go about it: 1) Teach  others: If you dont see yourself taking up your hobby in a professional sense, that doesnt meant that you cant still turn it into  a career. Whether youre a skilled musician or linguist, or youre pretty nifty in the kitchen, you can turn your skill into a job by passing on your knowledge to others. Depending on the skill and demand for it, you could set yourself up as a private teacher, or offer your service at  a local school or college. Teaching can be really rewarding, even more so when you are teaching something that you love. 2) Sell your creations: If your hobby is making some sort of crafts, artwork or even baking,  why not sell your creations? Sites such as Etsy are great for independent traders who want to sell  their crafts, or you could alternatively strike a partnership with a local crafts  shop, or even open your own! Baking businesses also have potential to be really successful, as not everyone has the time to whip up a cake from scratch and are more than happy to pay someone skilled to do it for them. This all being said, you dont necessarily need to create your products yourself, if you are passionate about something, becoming a supplier could be just as good a way to incorporate your hobby into your career. 3) Provide a service: Think about how you can use your hobby to assist others. If youre passionate about health and fitness, why not offer start up a business as a personal trainer or health coach? If you adore animals, you could offer dog walking service or pet sitting. The possibilities are endless! 4) Write/speak about your passion: If youre passionate about something, then shout about it!  Whether it be  through the written word, or talking about it at events; believe it or not, you can actually get paid for merely sharing  your passion and knowledge with others  . The rise of blogging has made it easier than ever for people to become experts in their field and there are lots of opportunities for industry professionals to speak at events, so be proactive and put yourself out there! Once you have built a bit of status for yourself within the sector, it could well be turned into a career. 5) Go professional: Though not everyone it lucky enough to get their big break, nothing should hold you back from achieving your dream if you feel passionately enough about it! If you dream of becoming a professional musician, start out doing open mic nights and progress  from there. If youre an athlete with the Olympics in your sight, train until youre at the best possible standard! Though youll probably need to put a lot of the leg work in before you can make a career from it, itll be worth it in the end.

Do you love your spouse

Do you love your spouse Simon Sinek is a resource we highly recommend. From his TED videos and books like “Leaders Eat Last and “Find your Why” he really captures what it takes to be a leader. There is a great video of Simon being interviewed by Tom Bilyeu. I was a little late finding it as 2.5 Million people have already viewed it. Simon creates a simple analogy about how you fall in love with your wife or significant other … and what you do to create the same connection between a leader, company and employee.   Why do some companies have 25% turn over and some companies 5%? Both companies could be in same industry and with same challenges. Why so different? Leadership is not something you learn in two-day course and not something you implement as the program of the quarter. It is just like falling in love. It is a series of little things that you do over and over. It does not have to be the whole company. It rolls up from individual leaders. Anthropologists think the ideal size is 150 people. This the maximum network an Individual can nurture. Another big learning is the importance of sticking with a set of habits over the long hall. I remember a lesson I got from my father “You judge others by their behavior and yourself by your intentions.” The great leaders we work with, consistently, day in and day out, practice a set of habits that make people feel safe, respected and challenged. Consistency is the source of their leadership strength. Want an example?   When you ask someone how their day is … do you care about the answer? Building your culture or tribe where you share beliefs and sense of belonging is not easy. It takes great of courage. But courage is not internal, it comes from the support we feel we get from others. First you create your followers and then they create you. Invest 11 minutes in watching Simon’s interview it will give you a Jolt.

Attention New Grads, Dont Give Up On Your Job Search Until You Read This

Attention New Grads, Don’t Give Up On Your Job Search Until You Read This Finding and landing a job  isnt easy for you as a new college graduate. You invested a lot of money and incurred a bunch of debt to make yourself look employable, so why cant you land a job? Have you done all these 9 things? What you really  need is on-the-job experience. But how do you land a job without it? All you want  is a foot in the door because your first job won’t be your last. Although the odds may seem stacked against you without any real work experience, you do have assets employers are seeking: a fresh perspective, willingness to learn and loads of energy. Your strong technology skills are also a plus. And because you presumably have fewer outside responsibilities and financial obligations, you demand a lower salary. Your odds of landing a job solely because you applied online are slim. In order to tip the scales in your favor, you’ll need to diversify what you do to uncover opportunities. These nine  tips should help get you started in your job search. Use as many as you can to speed up your search! 1. Reach Out To Your School It isn’t too late. Many career centers and alumni offices have services you can access remotely. Your school may offer resume writing assistance, interview prep help and even a job board with postings. You should probably  talk with some of your professors as well to see if they know about any projects or opportunities. after you move. 2.  Check Out Multiple Job Boards There are thousands of job boards out there, which means companies have to be strategic about where they choose to post opportunities. Indeed is a job board thats consistently scored well with employers as a source of hire, so be sure you use it. If you have a specific occupation or job in mind, find a job board that focuses on those types of job postings. For example, if you are looking for a job in accounting, look for a job board focused on accounting jobs. Also keep in mind that companies almost always list job postings on their company career page. You can search for these jobs using LinkUp. 3. Dont  Dismiss Employment Agencies Contingent (project-based, contract and short-term) work is on the rise. Employers often need someone to fill in for short-term projects. When this happens, companies turn to staffing agencies to help find what they are looking for. Temp jobs are great for acquiring work experience and getting your foot in the door with a company. Some agencies even offer temp-to-hire jobs, which provide you the opportunity to test drive the employer. 4. Volunteer Since you have some extra time on your hands, invest it by volunteering with an organization. Any volunteer experience can serve as a helpful source of networking contacts. Ideally, you’ll want to volunteer in an organization related to your career aspirations or fulfill a role that allows you to use some of your new skills. Any organization can use your help, just ask! 5. Get Out of Your House! Its tempting to spend your time looking online for your next job. But people hire people, and one of the best ways to meet people is to attend events. Look for young professional meetups, attend meetings for groups that support causes that are important to you, or even join a local kickball team to interact with people. 6. Hit Up Your Parents’ Friends It sounds pretty desperate, but you’ve got nothing to lose. Maybe one of them needs an intern for the summer or just someone to do the grunt work. Asking them yourself is better than having your parents ask. It says something about your character and maturity. 7. Clean Up Your Online Dirt Using social media can help convey your personality and style. Thats not a bad thing as long as youre representing your best side. Check your privacy settings on all your social media accounts, and make sure you aren’t publicly broadcasting every update to the world. Also realize that nothing is ever private on the Internet, despite your privacy settings. If you haven’t searched for the results of your name online, audit and monitor that as well. 8. Stay Connected Your college friends who are landing jobs may be able to help you secure one, too. Keep in touch with your classmates, and see where theyre getting jobs. Many companies offer incentives for employees to refer people for job openings. And, if you haven’t started yet, now is the time to start building your professional network on LinkedIn. Join alumni groups, follow companies and (most importantly) connect with people you know. The people you choose to connect with on LinkedIn could be professors, classmates, your parents’ friends and old bosses. Be sure to customize your request to connect, which must be done via the desktop version by clicking on the person’s profile. 9. ANY  Job is Better Than No Job Don’t worry if you can’t find the ideal professional job right away. It may take longer than you want. In the meantime, get a job â€" any job. There are many benefits to working besides the obvious financial gains. Going to work every day creates a sense of stability and routine that makes you feel better. You’ll also be able to use some of your talent and maybe even develop some new skills along the way. Most importantly, you will fill the gap in your work history so you wont have to explain that you were unemployed and looking. You must be relentless in your quest for a new job. This means you have to do more than search the job boards. Actively pursue jobs by finding inside connections, following up after you apply and even networking. You need to do all three things for every job you are interested in. Don’t get discouraged, and don’t give up. You will secure that first job, but it may not be the one you imagined. Im a Fire Starter!

Im a Fire Starter! OK, so I lied. Im here! I didnt take a break. I just absolutely couldnt once I experienced 3.5 hours with Danielle LaPorte as part of the NYC Fire Starter Group. There are a kajillion (yes, really a kajillion) ideas spinning in my head, and so many things I want to do (first: go through every item object I own and ask, Does this inspire me? get rid of the Nos), but I had to get out my biggest epiphany I had to do it quickly. I didnt even eat lunch! I didnt even pee! I just came home made this. I had to. But you get what you wish for: My fire was totally started, Danielle! Oh, and Danielle, you NEED to do a longer session. Like, at least 5 hours. But a whole weekend would be mind-blowing. And yes, not should. Need. Im a FireStarter from WhenIGrowUpCoach on Vimeo And what is up about my freeze face in the beginning of these videos? Gack.
